The Golden Girls: The Complete Seventh and Final Season

Golden Sunset - The Final Season episode guide
The last season of one of television's funniest sitcoms aired from September 1991 to May 1992. The episodes include:

Hey, Look Me Over - Rose finds an old camera with undeveloped film in it that belonged to her husband Charlie. When she develops the film, she is shocked to see photos of Charlie in bed with Blanche.

The Case of the Libertine Belle - The girls take part in a murder mystery weekend.

Beauty and the Beast - Blanche wants her granddaughter to compete in a Little Miss Beauty Contest.

That's For Me To Know - Dorothy finds a mysterious wedding photo in Sophia's collection and demands to know who the groom is. Blanche must make expensive repairs to her home or loose a renter.

Where's Charlie? - Rose is convinced that Charlie is sending her messages that he disapproves of her relationship with Miles. Blanche dates a baseball player.

Mother Load - Blanche dates a newscaster with a meddling mother. Stan wants...

The Golden Girls - Season Seven
At long last, the seventh and final season of "The Golden Girls" will finally be out on DVD. It's been great watching the first six seasons of this truly wonderful sitcom on DVD, shown just like it did when it first aired on NBC. True, there are a couple of episodes from seasons four, five, and six that featured some brief editing while seasons one, two, and three were pretty much edit free. The brief editing was a little disappointing, but nothing like the hack job that Lifetime has done to the episodes that have aired on the cable network for years.

SEASON SEVEN (1991-92)

Season Seven of "The Golden Girls" is just a notch below Season Six. Season Six was a pretty good season, though not quite as good as the first five seasons. Season Seven was in my opinion the weakest season of the show's seven year run, but that doesn't make it a completely bad season. There were episodes that made me laugh out loud; there were episodes that were marginally funny; and there...

The Final Season
What can I say? Too bad we can't give it more than 5 stars!! I am so very glad the release of the final season is coming quickly. We own all 6 seasons so far and continue to watch them everyday in re-runs.

A special note to all of you true Golden friends.

Take close attention in the final episode when Dorothy marries Lucas. the ending credits is a gem which has been edited these days on TV. We get to see the classic closing piece (which I am sure most of you remember) of the picture Rose took and it lies on the table developing, our girls, cheesecake and all.

The perfect ending to a special and most beloved show.

Peace.

The Golden Girls: The Complete Sixth Season

Episode guide
"Blanche Delivers" - Blanche is embarrassed that her daughter is artificially inseminated and wants to give birth in a birthing center.

"Once, In St. Olaf" - Rose meets her natural father when admitting patients at the local hospital. Meanwhile, Sophia is scheduled for a hernia operation.

"If At Last You Don't Succeed" - Stan's latest invention has turned him into a millionaire but Dorothy is still unimpressed. Blanche discovers $50,000 worth of St. Olaf war bonds after buying the bulk of Rose's yard sale items.

"Snap Out Of It" - Dorothy assists Sophia with "Meals on Wheels" and meets a hypochondriac.

"Wham Bam, Thank you Mammy!" - Blanche's childhood Mammy makes a visit and reveals that she had an affair with Big Daddy.

"Feelings" - Rose thinks that her dentist fondled her - Dorothy is taking the heat because she refuses to pass a popular football player.

"Zborn Again" - Dorothy thinks she has feelings for Stan again...

The Golden Girls - Season Six
The first five seasons of "The Golden Girls" were as good as it gets. The show had great writing, solid directing, and (most importantly) terrific comic acting by its quartet of veteran actresses. After the original writing team left after Season Four, a new writing team came on for Season Five to keep the laughs coming. For the most part they succeeded in keeping "The Golden Girls" a very funny show throughout the fifth season, although it wasn't quite up there with seasons 1 thru 4. Still Season Five was close to matching the greatness of the first four seasons. The show's main director, Terry Hughes, was still on board directing almost all the episodes for the fifth season, which I think continued to help keep it a first rate sitcom. But Hughes decided to leave after Season Five, and that eventually hurt "The Golden Girls" a little bit afterwards. Season Six is proof.

SEASON SIX (1990-91)

There's no doubt, Season Six of "The Golden Girls" is still pretty...

Castle in the Sky

Winsome fantasy
"Castle in the Sky" is a masterpiece of one of Japan's finest filmakers. There is a simple artistry to Miyazaki's stories. This is a children's film, but it is in the tradition of children's stories that appeal to all ages. A rare, pure fantasy, the film has the same magic as "Snow White and the Seven Dwarves" and other early Disney films.

I first saw this movie when it was released in US theaters as "Laputa the Floating Island." The mythical floating island of Laputa is taken from Swift's "Gulliver's Travels." Like Swift, Miyazaki cloaks a political statement with a fantasy, giving deeper meaning to his story. Environmentalism has always been central to his films, and "Castle in the Sky" is no exception.

Visual, the film is a literal flight of fancy. Much of the film takes place in the air. Air pirates travel in unwieldy flying machines. Giant dirigibles sail the skies. Travel by kite is an acceptable option. The animation is of the highest quality, as is the sound...

Spectacular Ghibli film in original Japanese, atrocious dub and sub
*Slight spoiler*
Also disclaimer: This review contains complaints galore so if you're not in the mood, it's best you pass this one by.

I love Studio Ghibli movies. There's a magical element of adventure and heart that are hard to find elsewhere. And Laputa is by far my favorite movie of all Ghibli movies I've seen (seen most of them). I think the English release unfortunately killed it. Note: The 2003 and the newer 2010 DVD versions both point to the same reviews. This review is based on the 2003 Disney American DVD release. It appears that the 2010 version reverts back to the original Japanese soundtrack, extra filler dialogue not present in the Japanese version have been removed. That said, the main points in the review - the choice of voice actors and change in dialogue - still apply. Also, below the title on the Amazon page, you'll see the list of actors as: Barbara Goodson (Actor), James Van Der Beek (Actor) - this is completely confusing as Barbara Goodson is...

Most Admired and Adored Miyazaki Film
Laputa, Castle in the Sky, is the most creative, ambitious, and adventurous Miyazaki film I have ever seen. I like Miyazaki's work very much for its grandeur, originality, and imagination. Sadly to say that Disney has lost its creative edge. It has been copying stories all over the world. Disney promised to release the Castle in the Sky video in 1999 but they failed to keep their promise. (Disney, please include the original Japanese soundtrack on the US release because I don't like the English voice actor behind Pasu.)

After 16 years since Castle in the Sky was first released in the theatres, I still consider it the creme da la creme of all anime movies. Certainly Laputa's art direction cannot compare to today's S/B CGI and S/B 3D animation. However, the story is much more fascinating and breathtaking than KiKi Delivery Service, My Neighbor Totoro, and even Princess Mononoke. Princess Mononoke is a graphically stunning piece of art but Castle in the Sky is a wonderful story...

Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Choo-Choo Express

This Choo Choo is chuggin along but not at full steam
As the father of twin three year olds who are enamored with the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse series, this DVD seemed like a reasonable gift. The number of repeat viewings at our house has outnumbered those for Mom or Dad's DVDs, so I feel qualified to write a review.

PROS

The quality of the episodes shares the same strengths of the series in general. Bright, colorful computer generated graphics are used in conjunction with simple plots. Mickey and his friends are friendly, interesting characters that our little guys have enjoyed since their twos. There are a few bouncy songs, but adults probably won't find them cloying or otherwise Barney-esque.

The main feature obviously focuses on Mickey's train, which is a natural theme for toddlers. It seems to be a holiday-themed episode, given the presence of snow and cameos by two icons of the Christmas season. The main feature runs at twice the length of a typical episode. It is accompanied by an extra,...

Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Choo Choo Express
The Mickey Mouse Clubhouse has changed a lot since I first saw it years ago. Mickey and his pals, Minnie Mouse, Donald and Daisy Duck, Goofy and Pluto are in their own half hour cartoon to teach young children colors, alphabet, numbers, shapes, cooperation, friendship and more. The Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Choo Choo Express was a special episode of the show and was an hour long instead of the usual half hour.

The Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Choo Choo Express episode started with Professor Ludwig Von Drake coming to the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse to talk to the gang about snow. The Professor loves snow but hates that it melts when it gets hot. So the Professor is going to go to Mistletoe Mountain to experiment and make snow that does not melt when it is hot so that everyone can play in the snow anytime they want. Before the Professor leaves though, he says he doesn't know how he will get all the snow back to the clubhouse; he needs a train. So out comes a picture of the Mickey...

Disney Playhouse DVD
My 17 month old grandson loved this DVD. He loved the music, and the characters, especially Pete!

The Golden Girls: The Complete Fifth Season

Episodes
I am overjoyed to see that this wonderful series has finally come to DVD. I have watched it for many years on television and recorded all their episodes (thirty tapes worth). After all these years, it is still one of my all time favorite shows due to its atmosphere of camaraderie, coziness, and interesting story lines. The main characters were so well acted that I feel as though they were members of my own family. However, the secondary actors generally did a very poor job.

For those of you who are devoted fans you might be interested in this list of episodes and summaries that I have compiled :

1. Sick and Tired Part 1 :

Dorothy begins to feel rather sick for no apparent reason. She visits numerous doctors who treat her as though she is crazy since they are unable to diagnose her malady. Simultaneously, Blanche begins to write a romance novel.

2. Sick and Tired Part 2 :

Finally, Dorothy is able to locate a doctor who is...

EPISODES ARE NOT COMPLETE NETWORK AIRINGS
I love the Golden Girls, and have watched them since the shows network debut in 1985. I was saddened and disappointed that for this fifth season release, (unlike the first four season releases) many of the episodes in this collection are edited from the original network airings. Although still much longer than the current Lifetime airings, these are nonetheless not complete, and in some cases have left out important dialogue. The show is as wonderful as ever, but more care should be taken so this does not happen again

Golden Girls: Season Five
"The Golden Girls" continued to pour on the laughs as it went into Season Five. For this season the show had something new. The original writing team that wrote many of the episodes of "The Golden Girls" during its first four seasons decided to leave and pursue other projects. So a new staff of writers came on to write the episodes, and for the most part did a very good job. However, Season Five was slightly weaker than the previous four seasons. While most the episodes for the fifth season did have its share of big laughs, there were a few episodes that seemed to lack the comedy that all the episodes from the first four seasons had, and this seemed obvious with a new writing team. On the bright side, director Terry Hughes was back to direct the episodes, but Season Five would eventually be his final season at the helm of "The Golden Girls". His directing of the episodes in Season Five kept this show on top. After he left, the show started to lose a little of its greatness and comic...
